How to hear it

Life notes / jeeva
G3 and N2 (occur only in the avarohana yet impart the raga's character); R2 (oscillated) with the signature S R M movement is central, and M is dwelt upon.
Resting notes / nyasa
P and S are the principal resting notes; the rakti phrase S P D S (and S S P D S in the mandra sthayi) is a special landing prayoga.
Signature phrases / prayoga
S R M (Ma with kampita), S R M G S, S R M M, G M P P, S R M P D D P, P D S P M G, S S N S R M P D S, M P M G R M G S, S N P D S; and the rakti S P D S / S S P D S. Best in slow (chauka) kala.
Ornament / gamaka
Kampita on R2 (both ascent and descent) and on madhyama; in S R M the Ma is rendered slightly raised with mild kampita; G3 in S R G kept steady; jaru slides and the graceful pratyahata gamaka.

Easy to confuse with

Shuddha Saveri (symmetric pentatonic, same arohana notes)
Kedaragaula (kaisiki nishadam replaces D2 in ascent)
