How to hear it

Life notes / jeeva
Rishabha (R2, chatushruti), described as the raga's life blood and both the jiva and nyasa svara.
Resting notes / nyasa
Rishabha (R2), the nyasa (landing/resting) svara (the same jiva-and-nyasa statement).
Signature phrases / prayoga
RGRS (R2 G2 R2 S) and PDNP (P D2 N2 P) are the leitmotifs; the phrases RGRS, P/r and M/N occur in profusion (/ = upward glide). Gandhara is vakra, occurring only in the avarohana krama (M1 R2 G2 R2 S).
Ornament / gamaka
Restrained, straight-note character with sparser kampita notes and profuse straighter notes; the vakra gandhara is approached zig-zag in descent; jaru/glide indicated in phrases P/r and M/N; dhaivata (D2) is alpa (very rare).

Easy to confuse with

Madhyamavati (shares the S R2 M1 P N2 S pentatonic ascent). Note: 'Sri/Shree' is also an alternate name for Kharaharapriya itself
unrelated to Hindustani raga Shree
